The Center for Animals and Public Policy at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, in partnership with the Homes for Horses Coalition, has released a report of the results from its survey of equine welfare organizations across the United States.
The goal of the project was to obtain current and representative data on rescues, sanctuaries, humane societies, and other organizations that take in and care for equines of all descriptions. The survey was designed to provide information that will guide new initiatives to support these organizations.
The on-line survey collected data from 2023 in these three categories:
- Organizational Structure and Finances
- Equine Residents
- Veterinary and Health Care
The participants represent 129 organizations from 39 states in all regions of the U.S., taking in more than 3,000 equines in 2023.
While the report highlights the many challenges equine welfare organizations face, it also shines a spotlight on the dedication of so many individuals to bettering the world for equines in need.
